FAQ-Canadian MBA or US MBA?

Nicholas Hoy of Canadian business online presents an answer to the most sought after FAQ: How do Canadian Business Schools stand against US Business Schools?

The following are some excerpts from the article.

.....

Schools with the best reputations don't necessarily offer the best educations, but the brand recognition of any graduate program — and particularly in the high stakes competition among business schools — is a major determinant of a student's future employment prospects. Go to Wharton or Harvard or Stanford, the logic goes, and doors will be opened. Attend Rotman or Ivey or Schulich, and you'll have to push the doors open yourself. Even Canadian business schools admit that getting noticed by recruiters can be more difficult north of the border. "We are able to place our students in all the top companies — but our students may have to work a little harder to generate and close the opportunity," acknowledges Jim Fisher, Associate Dean, MBA Programs at Toronto's Joseph L. Rotman School of Management. Wiser points specifically to the strong alumni networks and recruitment possibilities at Stanford — and indeed stories of intense battles among recruiters for talented students are legion at elite American business schools

.....

One key benefit is that recruiters often perceive elite American schools more favorably than elite Canadian schools; Stanford GSB grads like Wiser and Stark can expect enhanced future earnings by virtue of the institution they chose to attend. "I think the decision on where to do an MBA is too important a life decision to base on financial reasons," says Stark. "If you can gain admission to a top U.S. school, you can make it work financially."

....

Prospective MBAs elect to enroll in a specific program in part because they plan on finding employment wherever that program is located. And MBA students who weren't planning on working where they were schooled often find that the most comprehensive recruiting and alumni links are just around the corner. Prospective MBAs, therefore, had better approach the decision of which school to attend as a broader decision — and a bellwether moment — that could define their future career paths........An MBA from Rotman or Ivey will have strong brand recognition in Toronto, but it will have far less global cachet than an MBA from Harvard. Canadians who are lost to elite American MBA programs are often lost forever.

....

But although location is — and should be — a compelling factor on which prospective MBAs base their decisions, students and administrators alike suggest that the qualities of the program are more important than the school's location.

....

The best advice: "talk to as many students and alumni as possible at the schools you're considering," suggests Killingsworth.

....

The most accomplished prospective MBAs face a tough decision whether to attend school in the U.S. or to stay in Canada. It is the responsibility of top Canadian business schools to make this decision even tougher.

QSB Dean answers

Erin Pooley of Canadian Business magazine interviewed Queen's School of Business dean, David Saunders and the same featured in the October 22,2007 issue of the magazine. The following are some questions and key points out of the interview.

The Canadian economy is on a roll. Jobs are aplenty. Is an MBA still worth it?

An MBA is like an annuity. It's an investment, and the return on that investment is 12% to 20%, on average. Think about going to the bank and making an investment. Why on earth wouldn't you if you knew you could increase your salary that much?....

What about the flow of MBA students in and out of Canada?

More Canadians are going to business schools in the United States on scholarship as a result of changes in U.S. visa requirements, which have stopped students from other countries going. On the flip side, Canadian schools do not have the same visa restrictions, and we're now getting more applications from certain countries....

What's one of the biggest challenges for MBA schools moving forward?

How to teach the next generation of students. Whoever figures this one out first is going to have a leg up. They grew up with Facebook, the iPod and the BlackBerry. The challenge isn't really the tools, it's how to use those to further education....

Other Questions:

What are some of the biggest changes you've seen in business education in Canada over the past five to 10 years?

What's the next big trend in business education?

The business world is about the bottom line and the bottom dollar, and students who pursue an M.B.A. enjoy a major return on their investment. To determine the schools on this list, we looked at institutional data concerning job placement and average starting salary of students after graduation. In addition, we asked students to tell us about the efforts of their career placement office, the quality of recruiting companies, their level of preparation and more. According to The Princeton Review's survey of 18,000 business school students at the nation's Best 290 Business Schools, these 10 schools offer their students the best career prospects.

1. Stanford University
2. University of Chicago
3. Harvard University

How Western stays on top

When Nadine Ramrattan went looking for a university, she quickly narrowed down her choices to a handful of Canadian schools with top business programs. Then she picked the University of Western Ontario for one reason: student life.

"That was the difference, the community," says Ms. Ramrattan, 21, a native of Trinidad who did most of her scouting for a university online. She liked what she read about the school's mentorship programs and its residence life.

Three years later she is co-president of the university's day traders club and works as a residence adviser and as a team leader for the peer mentoring initiative for first-year students.

"I don't regret it," she says, even if it took her some time to adjust to the climate. "I have had a different experience than my sisters [at university] in the States and Britain."

That student experience — the chance to be involved in activities on and off campus — is a major selling card for the London, Ont., university and one that it puts front and centre in its recruiting material and website.

"The best student experience among the research-intensive universities in Canada" — it's a phase president Paul Davenport has made his mantra and that staff and student leaders have heard more than a few times.

So does it work? Students say yes.

For the sixth year, The Globe and Mail asked university students across the country to rate their schools on everything from the food in the dining hall to the quality of teaching, class sizes and the ability to get face time with their professors. The survey, conducted in partnership with The Strategic Counsel and the Educational Policy Institute, included more than 43,000 students at 53 schools — the largest sample group yet.

Western discovery: it pays to study at IIMs

Call it reverse brain drain but not just Indian students foreigners too are queuing up to get into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management. NRIs are also heading home to pursue higher studies, choosing IIMs over Wharton and Harvard

....
A management course in India costs about $22,000 as against the $75,000 that the Harvard charges. Little surprise then that even the NRIs who could get education abroad are now returning back for their management degree...

Commerce students help kids 'Break into Business'

Queen’s School of Business is buzzing with young entrepreneurs this week. A new camp, founded by two enterprising BCom students, teaches the fundamentals of business to kids with an entrepreneurial spirit.

“Break into Business” is a daycamp designed by Monica Walker and Alyssa Richard, both recent BCom grads, for students in grades four to eight.

Ali tenHove, an 11-year-old camper from Winston Churchill Public School, says Break into Business is like an adventure camp and a business camp at the same time.

Over the course of each week-long session, campers develop a business idea, a budget and a marketing plan before launching their business. The final day serves as an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned and also a chance to communicate their successes to parents via PowerPoint presentation.

Ali’s team, the Sweet 7s, came up with the idea of running a pizza and snack stand to cater to construction workers currently working on the Queen’s campus. For $3 customers got a slice of pizza, a cookie and a pop. “The construction workers were happy to get it because they were hungry.”

Ali, who aspires to a career wind-testing big buildings like her grandpa, says that business camp showed her all the potential paths that she could take with her career.

Queen’s Introduces Canada’s First Masters of Global Management Program

Program answers corporate Canada’s call for deeper international perspective

KINGSTON, ON – Queen’s School of Business today introduced Canada’s first-ever Masters of Global Management (MGM) program, further strengthening the School’s mission to prepare future business leaders for success on an international scale.

“In our ongoing dialogue with leaders of national and multinational corporations in Canada and abroad, Queen’s School of Business identified the need for managers with first-hand knowledge of cross-cultural business practices,” said Dean David Saunders of the program.

The curriculum and structure of the 12-month MGM were designed based on input from recruiters and students. To apply, students are required to have an undergraduate degree in business. This puts Queen’s a stride ahead of most European and international MGM programs, which typically spend one year on business fundamentals followed by one year on cross-cultural components. With its first class starting in September 2007, Queen’s MGM students begin and end the program with four months at Queen’s campus in Kingston, Ontario. In between, they spend a four month long placement at one of ten partner institutions around the world. All partners are top-tier business schools in their own countries, including Mannheim, Maastricht, Peking University, and Helsinki School of Economics.

An introduction to Canada (by Thomas Cook)

The following link of the Thomas Cook site provides an introduction to Canada : Link

Those expecting Canada to be a blander version of the USA should check their assumptions at the door. Canada's wild northern frontier, which has etched itself into the national psyche, and its distinct patchwork of peoples have created a country that is decidedly different from its brash neighbour.

It's the edginess between Canada's indigenous, French and British traditions that gives the nation its complex three-dimensional character. Add to this a constant infusion of US culture and a plethora of traditions brought by migrants, and you have a thriving multicultural society.

Got the Student's Permit!

The major task before every student seeking admission overseas is the Student's Visa and I have been successful in getting it. Its such a great feeling now.
It was a surprise call from Blue-Dart informing a shipment from VFS. Since I submitted my passport just 1 day earlier and I have got a shipment in not even 48 hours! But the bottom line is..i got the Visa!!
...whosh...whosh...apun chala..kingston calling!

Race to fly!

Since all other issues are progressing, the air ticket issue is also to be solved...just too many options and too many fares-cheaper but require a transit visa (United Airlines)--cheap but too long a flight ~ 23 hours (Aerofloat) or just waste too much time for the flight change at a intermediate airport.

The 2nd last thing that has to be finalised after Accomodation!

Passport Re-submitted!

I re-submitted my passport after 10 days of my medical tests. Hopefully the reports have reached the embassy!
The wait starts again!

One Step Closer : by Linkin Park or BCP ?

Can-Visa Medical done

One more task in the process of acquiring a Canadian Visa is completed with a successful medical check up.
Tests performed during the medical checkup
  • Blood-various types-even HIV and STD tests
  • Urine
  • Chest X-ray
  • Physician consulation
Expense: INR 1720
Time taken: 1 hour

So the only work left is wait! yes again!

The medical reports will be sent after 5 days to the Embassy but the doctor. The letter received along with the passport request me to submit passport again (for Visa stamping if successful) after 15 days of medical check-up!

Target date of passport submission at VFS, Bangalore: March19-20

Visa Stage 1 Clear

Received my passport back with a letter requesting me to get the medical check-up. All other things are perfect.

So Visa application stage 1 is clear!!! Only medical check-up left!

Taken the appointment for the medical also!

Login to MBA portal received

Received a mail giving me details of the login credentials for the Queen's Portal.
The portal has lot of information, including links to accommodation sites, details on notebook PC configuration and other program schedule and details.
The official Queen's email has been created too!

Finally!! a visa status change!!

I visited the VFS office where I had submitted my Visa application. The lady told me that the passport was scanned inside the embassy on 20th Feb. So the passport is inside the Embassy and the processing is taking time.
But finally at around 7 pm the visa/passport status on the VFS Visa Tracker changed to "Passport Couriered on 5/3/2007". This was such a relief!
The next tasks were to get the passport at the earliest and hoping that everything else is cleared and a request for a medical check-up is there!

Good luck!

A trip to police station

I went to the local police station to see if my Police Clearance Certificate application has reached there. It had reached there and so I was ready for the next step i.e. the police verification.
Certain documents are required by the police officer. Not knowing about the same, I had not taken them. The following is a list
  1. 3 passport size photographs, preferably the ones attached on the Police Clearance Certificate application
  2. *Proof of residence-Rental agreement is usually not accepted. Gas connection/phone bill specifying the address is required. One latest and one earliest bill is required.
  3. Xerox of passport
*The date on this proof is the date which will be taken as your start date of stay in Bangalore for the PCC. Hence check if you can obtain all the proofs starting from your date of arrival here. Rest depends on the police officer working on your application.

The police officer will dictate you a letter addressed to the in-charge of the police station. Once done, don't be surprised if some loosening of purse-strings is required!

Approximate time taken: 15 minutes

A wonderful experience as the police officer was very polite and even got a chair for me ;)

Wait... wait and wait..

"Curiosity kills the cat" is a well-known idiom. But what seems to work in my case is "Uncertainty kills the dog"

Friday and the 10th working day after submitting my visa application has passed. No update from the VFS, no reply from the Embassy, no change in Visa-tracker status.

The only hope is a possible dispatch from Embassy on Monday, 5th March and the passport reaching me on 6th March-thats still 4 days away!

Queen's Scholarship-naa

Received a mail from Queen's admission committee stating...

Dear ..,

......I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you an entrance scholarship to the Queen's MBA program.

....If you do encounter difficulty with your financing, it may be possible to grant you a one-time deferral to the session beginning May, 2008..............

Regards,

I, obviously, didn't accept the deferral option.

Indians still need to prove their English proficiency skills

Be it an application for MBA to a Business School or for Permanent Resident (PR), Indians still need to prove their English proficiency skills. And giving one test is not enough-while the b-school applications might require you to submit your TOEFL scores, a PR application requires IELTS -General Module and TOEFL is not accepted.

Just imagine that you have given IELTS-Academic Module and it is not accepted for the PR application (this needs to be checked, just an assumption)

So whatever be the case, I booked an appointment for IELTS at an expense of INR 7400. The well sought after date got full and hence had to take another one, which is just on the date I intended to clear off from Bangalore!!

Police Clearance Certificate application submitted

Finally submitted an application for the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), at the Bangalore Police Commissioner's Office (PCO), required for the Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) application. As instructed by one of the fellow MBAites I took a colleague who knew Kannada well!

Documents required for PCC
  1. PCC Application form (can be had from PCO)
  2. 3 passport size photographs
  3. Xerox of passport
  4. *Proof of residence-Rental agreement is usually not accepted. Gas connection/phone bill specifying the address is required.
  5. Remit challan of INR 200
*The date on this proof is the date which will be taken as your start date of stay in Bangalore for the PCC. Hence check if you can obtain all the proofs starting from your date of arrival here. Rest depends on the police officer working on your application.

Procedure for applying for a PCC at Bangalore PCO (with inputs from A**x)
  1. From the Single Window counter at the Police Commissioner's Office (PCO), obtain the application form for Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). 'Canadian Immigration' can be stated as the reason for PCC if asked.
  2. The next step requires a submission of INR 200 at an a/c (a/c details available at both PCO and the bank) at the Treasury Branch of State Bank of Mysore at Lady Curzon Road, Near Bowring Hospital, Shivaji Nagar, Bangalore. A strange procedure here requires you to collect the remit form (challan) from a xerox shop opposite to the Bank. Don't be surprised if you find that the entire form is in Kannada. Here is where your Kannada-versed friend comes into picture. Though the columns are similar to any other bank remit form, but still! Fill the form, get it stamped on the ground floor and then remit the charges on the first floor.
  3. Submit the application form with the INR 200 receipt/challan at the PCO Single Window submission counter and collect the acknowledgment. Do verify your details on this. This acknowledgment is required to collect your PCC after approximately 15 days from PCO.
  4. The officer accepting your form at the PCO will ask you to visit your local police station (also mentioned in your PCC application form) after 2 days of submission of your PCC application at the PCO.

Viza chiza! worry shary!

The lady at the VFS counter told me that my passport will be back in 3-4 working days time and according to that deadline, I should have received the passport by 23rd Feb. But neither did I receive my passport nor the status of my application in the Visa Application Tracker on VFS site changed. It still said that the application has been dispatched to the Embassy on 19th Feb. The VFS SMS tracker atleast mentioned that the Passport has reached the Embassy on 20th Feb.
Can you call this tracking? 2 different status for 1 application!!

The worry is increasing-all sorts of thoughts anticipating the reasons of such a delay are coming in my mind. A call to the counselor soothed me a bit as according to her, the delay can, in no way, be taken as a signal for rejection.

Finally I called the Embassy and they asked me to mail them. Lets see when and what the reply comes.

Assignments in progress

Assignments are an integral part of every program and they come tagged with a deadline!
I finished the first two-which were more or less like a questionnaire which wanted to just check few certain qualities and skill-set.
The accounting work book needs attention too. Will seek help from one of my Charted Accountant friend!

Good luck-you gotta complete lot many things in the days till the college starts!

Shipment or a 'payload of future'?

pay·load [pey-lohd] –noun : the part of a cargo producing revenue or income

Finally the well awaited shipment arrived. I got to know from the weight of the shipment, as mentioned in the tracking email from Fedex, that its gonna be one huge bundle and YES it was.
The packet contains the information we have been waiting for since days: you name it, its in there-accommodation, fees schedule etc. But what we had not expected was that there will be study material also in it.
Going through the study material, one can firmly say that it is something which will enable a smooth transition from an engineer to a MBA-something that will help us glide through the MBA course: a "payload" of future.

Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Login? Where and for what?

Batti lag gayi hai.
Received a mail which details some username and password for logging in to a site for an assignment.
Argh!! Assignments from now on!

The 'in-transit' shipment contains details related to this mail. Lets wait and watch!

With best wishes for the days to come and the year ahead and everything more!!!!!

Happy days about to end!

I just got a notification of a courier for me on its way from Kingston-thanks to L. As far as speculations go, it might contain some books to read, some optical discs, some assignments and work books and some questionnaire. So its time to get into the Queen’s robe and start feeling the warmth of a North American MBA!

Good luck to myself

A 'railway-track' sprint

It is believed that any country's embassy, when issuing a non-immigrant permit/visa (student permit, work permit etc) satisfy themselves of the fact that the person seeking the permit will return back to his country. And for the same reason, the Canadian Embassy has included a Questionnaire as a part of the Visa application where an answer to what one intends to do once he has completed his education is expected.

While filling my Visa application, I made sure that my answers are able to convince the Visa officials of my return to India. This would enable me a hassle-free Students Visa/permit for my MBA course at Queen's.

Along with this, I am running to collect the documents which will enable me to successfully file a Permanent Resident (PR) application upon reaching Canada. The one of the few documents which I have come to know is a Police Clearance Certificate from all the countries of stay. Luckily or unluckily I have not visited been to any country outside India.

My present state of resident application for Canada is like that of a Railway track where the two rails are parallel and can never meet but run together always. For me, though the tracks are running parallel for the time being, its a different case-a case of an athlete running on two sprint tracks simultaneously with am aim to win each sprint. One of the sprint/track is a Student Visa, where I am trying to assure the Visa officials that I am returning back to India; the other being the Permanent Resident application process, something enabling me stay in Canada like a Canadian citizen sans the right to vote.

A question seldom pops up in my mind nowadays-After getting a PR status-will I be an Indian? or will I be a Canadian? or will I be both? Its not less than an identity crisis!

Monday, February 19, 2007

On a balloon..

The feeling's different-looks like i am flying high-riding on a balloon!
Even though the visa has not been granted and only the application has been submitted, but its a great relief. The hectic job of collecting the documents, arranging them, making sure that they are correct as desired by the Canadian Embassy is finally over.
Let's wait for the passport to return back and then hopefully move towards the medical examination.
That will be even bigger relief!! Can then it be "flying on a jet plane?" (and not a ballon as i have written now)

Do-did-done! 2/3rd of the pie baked!

After the get-set-go-signal, I went ahead to submit the Visa Application.
The process was very smooth.
The application accepting officer asked me to get a xerox of the first page of the passport where the picture is pasted. Then she asked for all the documents one by one and then tagged them and put in one folder/bag. The total amount was INR 5741 including courier charges and service tax, which you pay after reading the terms and conditions of VFS.

Time taken to submit the application form: approx 35 minutes even though I was the only person there.

Got a receipt number which I can use to track where the passport has reached. It can be used on the VFS's website (http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/visatracking.html) to track your passport. One can also track the passport by sending the following as an SMS to 7333: "VISA CD {passport#}". Also got the attested copy of the passport back.

The lady told me that if everything goes ok, the passport should reach me back in 4-5 working days with a request letter for a medical examination. I have to re-submit my passport after 10 working days (approx 2 weeks as sat, sun is holiday) along with the attested xerox copy of passport, the letter from embassy (which comes with the passport and has medical examination instructions on it), payment receipt and INR 170.

Suggestions:
  • Try to keep different types of documents separate:IT Returns separate, Statements separate. The other way of tagging by person also works. I tried both-the only thing that is required is one should know which document is where!
  • Use Post-Its and binder clips to categorize documents according to person and to create an index. The CA's consolidated report comes handy. A report similar to CA's can be created by the applicant himself.
  • Photo clicking facility is also available at VFS.
  • Verify your name and Passport number on the receipt that you get after payment.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the passport and hoping for the best!

2nd appointment with Visa counselor

February 19, 2007 @ 1030 hrs the work started....
All the documents were thoroughly verified
SoP checked
Bank statments verified-proof attached for some unusual credit.

Counselor again in mood for some debate over-jewelery to be added to the liquid assets and immovable assets to be added to the final value of assets! But I had my say and put both thing things. No harm in putting something over and above the required amount!

Question answered: Issue of a study permit of a lesser duration?
Unsatisfactory-answer received: Happens sometimes! Get it renewed.

Everything is set now...to roar!!!!

The night was indeed long...

The pending activity of sorting the Visa documents was started on Saturday night @ 01.30 AM.
Too many documents to be arranged
Too many binder clips
Too many 'Post-its'

But thanks to the CA's extensive report that the documents could be well arranged and prepared for the Visa application.
The first draft of SoP (Statement of Purpose) written and visa-questionnaire answers prepared.

But..here comes the axe: @5.00 am on a Sunday morning!
Never had imagined such a bad impact of missing a decimal ".".
Never had imagined how one extra digit as a result of missing decimal will mess up things!
INR 40k became INR 4,00k, thanks to the missing of decimal point in one of the liquid assets value.
Also, the letter of support from parents had some numerical error.
Now point is: Sunday-everything closed-Target of application submission on Monday very close.
Somehow got the report again prepared-thanks to mom and the CA! Got the scanned copies of the documents-thanks to dad! Got a colour print of all the document-no thanks-did it myself!

And again the papers are all ready-after all xerox and final re-check!

What I wish I’d known then - Looking back at the MBA experience

The MBA or Masters in Business Administration degree is now probably the world’s most popular and widely recognised post-graduate qualification. Every year, more than 100,000 students will invest large amounts of time, effort and money to gain one. But, with the benefit of hindsight, do graduates really believe that it’s been worth all the effort involved?
According to a recent poll by the careers and education group, QS, the company behind the World MBA Tour, there are almost no MBAs who regret having taken the qualification, but a significant proportion do wish that they had approached their studies in a different way. One of the most common regrets centres on a lack of planning for the programme and for the wider business school experience.

Surviving an International MBA – 2

Welcome to Term 2 and you are back to losing sleep in the night and catching a few winks during the class. By now, you know who the class stars are and pretty much who are the people who just talk in class for air-time. You try to do everything around you, assignments and quizzes and club activities. But you will be warmed up enough and resigned to the fact that you might after all say adieu to your sleep and social life! But I feel that many of us get too carried away at this point.

Surviving an International MBA - 1

It’s been a long time since I put up an article and thought it was about time I told you all, how it has been at a US business school and what the experience amounts to, at the end of the day. I am sure that my blog has been doing a decent job about updating on the fortnightly or so activities, so here’s my attempt to run you all through the “Surviving an International MBA”. My take is that from the Fuqua stand-point. I am sure the experience will be similar elsewhere if not the same.
all started when I got accepted at a ‘good’ business school in India. The thought of actually stepping out of the shores for my MBA crept into my mind and after a year of failing to fund my International MBA, I came back with much vigor and applied to some pretty well known schools abroad.....

Financing your international MBA

Resigning from a secure job, moving country, even leaving family and friends behind - potential MBAs seem to take such obstacles in their stride. But with programmes at top-flight schools now costing as much as US $75,000, one question seems to occupy business school applicants more than any other – just how can I find the money to pay for my education?
Every year, as part of its ongoing research project, TopMBA surveys nearly 4,000 aspiring MBAs to establish whether the issue of finance was likely to prove a barrier to study. The latest poll found that practically all had already looked seriously into how they would fund their time at business school and a wide variety of methods were cited from scholarships to personal loans. Scholarships, perhaps not surprisingly, were the most popular option around the world, favoured by 74 pc of respondents. Next came the student’s own savings at 68 pc and then some form of external loan at 61 pc. Only 28 pc realistically expected to get financial help from their employer.

The emphasis that students place on funding methods seems to vary considerably from area to area. Help from family and friends appears to be most common in the Asia-Pacific region where it was cited by 48 pc of those questioned, in contrast to only 43 pc in the USA and Western Europe. Personal loans were the preferred source for over 81 pc of US students, but less than 57 pc of those from Latin America. Company sponsorship was expected from 36 pc of respondents in the Middle East and Africa, but only 21 pc of those in Latin America and a student’s own savings were the favoured method of 80 pc of Western European candidates, but only 62 pc of those from the Middle East and Africa.

Whatever a student’s initial preference, the most common source of finance in practice is now the education or career loan. We look at some of the sources of such loans across the globe:

Finance sources around the world
India
Indian nationals have access to a wide range of education loans geared to fund MBA study. Key suppliers include State Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, State Bank of Mysore, Bank of Baroda and the Industrial Development Bank of India. Loans can be used to cover the cost of fees, travel to an overseas school, the cost of books, computers, etc and living expenses. In most cases candidates will already need to have secured a place at a recognised institution and may need to supply a guarantor, such as a parent or close relative, with sufficient funds to cover the loan. Repayment periods range up to four years after graduation and interest rates are currently around 8.5 to 8.75 pc.

Edu Loan sanctioned!!

Finally got my Education Loan sanctioned!!

Thanks Dad and Mr.Banga.

Document collection in progress..but 2nd appointment with counselor postponned

My parents are running from door to door to get all the documents required for the visa. Visits to the CA, notary public (for certain legal issues), banks (statements etc)!!
My dad's making the max of his efforts to get the loan sanctioned at the earliest. Even taking a loan from UCO Bank at .25% more than SBI as the loan can be sanctioned faster there.

In midst of this, when the next(2nd) appointment with the CEC Visa counselor was set for February 14, 2007, due to some personal work, the counselor has gone home and delayed my appointment and submission by 5 days!
Next appointment (and hopefully visa submission too) on Monday, February 19, 2007!

Getting ECNR Clearance @ Bangalore

The Passport office is on the Brunton Road, off MG Road (Just next to ING Vyasa Bank)
(Passport Office, 1A, Brunton Road, Bangalore -560025; Tel: 080 - 25584901, 25584543, 25584536)

Documents Required:

  1. Passport (Original and xerox)
  2. Proof of ECNR Eligibility (B. Tech mark-sheet –Original and Xerox) (Do not know about 10th or 12th certificates being accepted)
  3. Completed Form#2 with 1 passport size photograph (https://passport.gov.in/cpv/miscell.pdf)
  4. In case the Passport is not issued in Bangalore, then proof of stay for the last 1 year is required in the form of any 1 of telephone bill, mobile bill, gas connection, Letter from employer. The address on these should be your home address and office addresses are not accepted. (Original and Xerox).
  5. Rs. 300 fees

The Xerox will be submitted along with the application whereas the original will just be seen and returned back at the same moment. I don’t know if the attested copies can be used to verify the Xerox in place of originals.

Procedure: There are two ways of going about it-long and short way. Fill the form#2 in all respects and be ready with the documents (original and Xerox)

Long way: There is one common queue for all work related to passport. You have to stand in the queue and then submit your application. The office opens at 9.30 AM but by 9.00 AM there were around 150 persons in the queue, so I didn’t try this way. Even the method of spending 300-400 bucks to an agent will look a waste of money if you try the short way.

Short way(Suggested!!)

  1. Go to http://nitpu2.kar.nic.in/passport/process.htm, Fill in the details and take the appointment.
  2. Take a printout of the appointment page and attach it with the application packet. The person at the counter checks specifically asks for this to be attached.
  3. Go at the stipulated time. Don’t be late than 5.30 PM as the office closes by that time.
  4. On the first floor, reach counter #7. The person there will verify your Xerox. Once done, he will move your application to counter #6. The person at counter #6 verifies your Xerox with the originals. He then moves the application to the counter #5. There he will ask for the fees of Rs. 300. He will give you a receipt and ask you to come next day after 3.30 PM
  5. Go the next day and then see if your name has been called for. When called, go with the receipt of Rs. 300. The person at the counter will take your sign against ‘ Passport Received’ and then verify this signatures with the ones in Passport. Once done, you are given your passport with ECNR Clearance. Its better to check the passport for the same.
  • Total Time taken for submission after you reached the counter (queue is usually small as very few people know about this procedure): 5 minutes
  • Total Time taken for receipt of passport on Day2: 5-20 minutes

The good points here being

  1. You don’t have to spend a lot of time if you documents are all present as required.
  2. The fees is taken only when your form is fully checked for accuracy and verified against originals.

Details on ECNR available at the following links:

Note: Persons above 50 years of age are automatically eligible for ECNR

1st appointment with Visa counselor

I decided to take the services of the counselor at the Canadian Education Centre (CEC) in Bangalore. The charges are INR 2500 for 2-3 sessions.
I had taken some documents for the first appointment which were as according to the VFS's checklist and also what CEC's desk-lady had sent me. I got them verified and noted the instructions that the counselor mentioned. I also got some of my questions answered. I had filled the Personal Information Form, Questionnaire and the main application form roughly. She verified the same and suggested modifications/improvements.

Important Note: No original documents are to be submitted as whatever is submitted is not returned back in case of a visa reject.

Questions answered:
  • On a student's visa, can I go to some other country like USA, or if required India and then go back to Canada to resume my studies? Student Visa/Permit are usually Multiple Entry Visas. This means that during the time frame of the validity of the visa, the visa-holder can go in and out of the country any number of times.
  • Is a Temporary Resident Visa required for me? No

Important points noted during the session: (xerox of document wherever applicable)
  • On applying for a 1 yr Student Permit, usually 3 months extra student visa is granted, making it a total of 12+3=15 months Students Permit.
  • If Mutual Funds and Stocks are being added to the Liquid Funds, then their value with the Net Asset Value (NAV) /price-per-stock as on a specific date should be mentioned along with.
  • For LIC Insurance Policy, the original policy (whose size is usually > than A4) has to be xeroxed
  • For Mutual Funds, get the profile page of the person in case the mutual funds statement doesn't show the name on whom the funds are. {Case of online share trading accounts}
  • For immovable property, sale deed and valuation report by Charted Accountant to be attached.
  • #If possible, get the xerox of the security deposit draft. In case the draft was paid from a bank account, a printout of the debit is a plus.
  • Its beneficial to make a 2 page Statement of Purpose(SoP) by the Applicant mentioning the background, the reasons for choosing the stream/specialization and college, future plans. This has to be in sync with the CV and the Visa Questionnaire.
  • #If a complete profile of the applicant can be created, it shows that the applicant is strong. It can include all academic certificates, extra curricular certificates, score cards, mark-sheets (GMAT, TOEFL etc), appointment letter of company, salary revision letters, promotion letters, performance letters.
  • (Very Imp Point) Immigrant status of applicant(s) in country where applying (point 6a of form IMM1294B of Student's application): Since I am in India and am submitting my application in India, so this has to be "Citizen" since I am an Indian

Following documents are required for the applicant, parents (if supporting) and sponsorer (if any)

  1. #Pay slip for last 6 months
  2. IT returns for last 3 years
  3. Letter of employment from employer stating the date of joining
  4. Bank-statments for last 2 years: In case some huge credits are there, it has to be explained with proofs. The term "huge" is a relative term w.r.t. the normal quantum of transactions and balance.
  5. Letter from Bank manager stating bank account number, name of account-operator, date since holding the account and balance as on a specific date.
  6. A statement showing clearly the different types of liquid separately for each person. The fixed assets can be clubbed together. (This statement works like an index and is very useful)
  7. Statement of support mentioning the school's name and the program being attended.

Other documents required
:
  1. Letter of acceptance by college
  2. #Receipt of security deposit
  3. #^Loan sanction letter (if using loan)

Some contradictory/debatable points during the discussion

  • Gold is not counted as a liquid asset: My CA who makes reports for Immigration told me that gold is counted but the counselor has opposite views
  • Assured Value is taken for LIC Insurance Policy rather than Surrender Value

#Optional documents
^Case of loan: It is not necessary to include loan in the liquid assets. In case your assets' value is matching the figure of tuition+living expenses+to and fro travel expenses. Only the xerox of loan sanction letter is to be submitted.

A question asked to me by someone w.r.t. loans: "During the submission of Visa Documents , Can i mention that I have applied for Loan and the processing is underway or is it mandatory ( for a successful visa stamping ) that I should show them the Approval or Pre Approval?". The question is tricky!

Answer: Visa officials need to have a proof of your financial stability -proof of tuition fees and living expenses. If you have enough funds over and above the loan to satisfy the 90k$ i dont think it should have a problem. That time you dont even need to show that you are applying for loan. But consider this situation. you apply for loan.god forbid-the loan gets rejected, but you have a valid visa.then? So its not good to do that.I will say , in fact the application can be rejected! Its hard truth, though a speculated one.

ECNR issue: Online appointment

Tried the online way. Let's see if the things really work in government offices, even though they are in Bangalore.
On the link http://nitpu2.kar.nic.in/passport/process.htm, one can get an online appointment for most of the work related to passport.
You need to take a print out of this appointment and take it along with you at the appointment.

I got an appointment for Tuesday, February 6, 2007 @ 16.24 hrs.

Lets see if some work is done!

FT rankings raise eyebrows-questions galore

The FT rankings for 2007 are out and to everyone's surprise, Queen's doesn't list anywhere in the top 100 Business Schools in the world! This has raised many eyebrows and numerous questions.

  1. Reputation
  2. High acceptance ratio (number of people selected:number of people applied)
  3. Jobs for foreign students
.....

ECNR: Docs required

I checked the Passport Office for documents required for getting your ECNR done.
Following is the small list. (Xerox/Original was not mentioned, hence no number of copies of xerox also!)
  1. Original Passport
  2. Filled Form#2
  3. Proof for ECNR Clearance (12th pass certificate or beyond)
  4. In case passport is not issued by the office where you want to get the ECNR done, proof of stay for 1 year (can be Residential agreement, Letter from employer)
Rest, once my ECNR is done, I will confirm the correct documents required.

ECNR issue: 1st Visit to Passport office

Should i call the 1st visit of the 2nd? Does the first one on Saturday last week when the passport office was closed can be called a first visit?

Just coming back after a unfruitful attempt at getting my ECNR done. Even after reaching at 9 AM though the office opens at 9.30 AM, the queue was 150-200 persons long. And there is only one queue for all Passport related work.

I went alone since others had some work.

Tried with the agents also. (Yeah! I had to, didn't want a re-trip to the place again and that too at a time -around 7 AM on Monday, Feb 5th, as planned with others.) The agents wanted atleast 700 bucks for getting your thing done. The others who had agreed for less (read 600) had raised their hands since the queue was long. I was just not in mood to shell out more than double what it will take officially. So had to come back!

One of my friends just told me that one can take an appointment online and then visit the Passport office. Let's see, how this works out, thought the current plan to visit the Passport office at around 7 AM on Monday, February 5th, is still in place!

Points to note for getting a demand draft in foreign currency from Indian Banks

Some points to note for making a demand draft in foreign currency.
  1. Usually banks take 2-3 hours time from the point of submission of demand-draft application to the point of handing over the demand draft to you. I didn't knew this and had to travel across Bangalore to get the draft. (in case you have an ICICI saving's acount and you are getting the draft from non-home branch, be careful as you are eligible for only one non-home branch per month without any charges. Don't know about other banks!)
  2. You need to have a documentary proof as to why do you need a demand draft in foreign currency. I carried a xerox of the Queen's Admit letter which had come in the courier.
  3. Instruct in the demand draft application the currency required clearly and also check the same when you receive the demand draft. There is sometimes a confusion between US$ and Canadian$.
  4. Mention clearly the Payee's name and verify the same when you receive the demand draft. Bank officials can be careless at times. For my case it was important as "Queen's" is very different from "Queens".
Also, take a xerox of the demand draft for records before you send.

Ah! something finally! ($2000 sent)

Finally I sent my Can$2000 security deposit to Queen's along with my completed Personal details and photographs. It will reach the Queen's office most probably on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 in case the DHL people don't want to loose it on the way like last time.

This is the first written confirmation from my side, accepting the Queen's admission offer!

What the heck?

Since the start of 2007, mails and forwards have been pouring describing 2007 as a unique year-unique in a sense that all holidays fall on weekdays (atleast for the Indian holiday system). I was happy to know and had also forwarded the same mail to many others. But never knew it will affect in a negative sense.

I couldn't get the Can$2000 draft for Queen's yesterday as was fixed up with work. I thought that I will get it today. The weekday holiday schedule of 2007 finally hit me, for the first time. The bank was closed today as there was some holiday.

My earlier efforts to get the draft on a Saturday were in vain as the ICICI Bank doesn't deal in forex on a Saturday! The work's pending since many days and its been a week since I received the courier containing the official admit letter in print.

There have been delays in the loan processing work because of the way holidays are spread in 2007, specially for banks.

Keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow is not another day in the non-weekend holiday calendar.

Case of availing 2 education loans for 1 course

Question:
Not being able to take a loan from 2 diff banks for the same course, why is this a problem?

Answer: (Courtesy NK)
While applying for an educational loan, in the student educational loan form there is an undertaking which we have to sign. It explicitly states that ¡§I have not taken any other loan for funding this course. That makes it impossible to apply for more than one loan for the same course. Had it been allowed otherwise then everyone would take loans worth 5 lakhs from four different banks. This way we would save a lot of money also, since the interest rate charged increases proportionately with the loan amount. The only other option is to give a false undertaking i.e sign that part of the form and still take loan from some other bank. How ever I would strongly advice against it as there is every possibility of this matter coming to the banks notice. Under such a situation the undertaking is considered "fraud" and the offender is liable to be tried under law.

Debate Ends!

The dilema, the debate ends!

Which is better: Queen's or Ivey?
Which gets you a better job: Queen's or Ivey?
Compare Queen's vis a vis Ivey?
What if Ivey gives you a scholarship? Will you still join Queen's?
..............
..............
This and much more!

But finally the debate has ended! A reject from Ivey is what it needed to do the job!
In fact, had prayed for it once. One can say I am just too happy with my Queen's admit and don't have to do the process of comparison and choosing which is better.
It has ended few of my future colleagues' fears!

But there is little sadness. Ivey being the only school for which I had put lots of efforts. For all the three other schools, the essays wouldn't have require this much effort if there were submitted at its number. The essays were re-written twice, re-verified; CV was re-structured, enhanced; certain questions unanswered before were answered. In a nut-shell, the application was different from others and hence required considerable efforts.

Anyways, God has granted me what I had asked for. But still do I need to say...
"Beggars can't be choosers?" or "Its difficult for a begger to choose between a Re 1 note and Re 1 coin".

The final verdict: Ivey's Reject

The Final Hawk is down!
The final and the awaited of the four application results just came. Unexpectedly a reject!
After 2 successful interview calls, here is what came back!

Subject: Ivey MBA Program

Dear ,
After careful consideration of your application, the admissions committee regrets to inform you that your application has not been accepted for the Master of Business Administration Program. This decision should not be viewed as a reflection of your potential for a successful career in business.

We would like to thank you for considering our school and we appreciate the time and effort that you put into your application. The committee considered it carefully and commends you on your successes to date.

Admission to the Ivey MBA Program is competitive. In assessing applications, the committee looks at undergraduate and graduate grades, GMAT, full-time work experience, extra-curricular involvement, achievements and leadership qualities. The committee finds it must disappoint many applicants who are well qualified for other programs.

If you wish to re-apply to Ivey you must wait at least one year and clearly demonstrate how you have improved your application.

Thank you for your interest in the Richard Ivey School of Business. We wish you every success in your future endeavours.

Sincerely,
....

Tips for Education Loans

Two points mentioned in a mail by one of my friends.

  1. Availing more than one education loan for the same course is not allowed. This means it is not possible to take two loans of 7.5 lakhs from two different banks.
  2. A financial adviser strongly recommends that I should take the loan at the fixed rate instead of floating (though there is a difference of 1.5% currently in favor of floating rate), since our repayment period will definitely exceed 3 years, so in the long run fixed interest rate works out better as the floating rate is increasing continuously.
Thanks N for this

Accommodation @ Queen's

The queries about accommodation during Queen's MBA course have been in discussion since very long. Till date there are 9 guys and 2 gals who have confirmed joining the Queen's MBA by paying the CAN$2000 initial deposit.
Now the questions are
  1. When to start scouting? How early?
  2. How?
  3. How many together in one place/sharing?
  4. Outside campus accommodation vs inside (Queen's Graduate Residence)
  5. Only Indian or mixed? (let the Queen's diversity point get in every dimension of a student's life!!)
  6. All guys/mixed!
The first question is one which is being asked again and again with some people of the opinion that the scouting can be done in a day or two even after reaching Kingston.
The second question found some reply, thanks to R: Check out the Queen's University's accommodation classified page/listing service @ http://notes.queensu.ca/ALSWeb.nsf
The third remains a personal option-single, 2 in1, 3 in 1, 4 in 1, 5 in 1 or even 6 in1
The fourth question has multiple views about the benefits of staying inside and outside. But staying outside has surely some benefits w.r.t. the money part of it.
The fifth question has been just raised by one of the current students.
The sixth point-ah! the controversy between thinking, belief and fantasy!

Travel Cards

For payment in foreign currency while abroad, there are many options like credit cards, debit cards, travel cards, travelers' cheques and of course cash.
I explored the option of travel cards from few of the different merchants.

SBI Vishwa-yatra card:
A pre-paid forex card which can be re-charged with foreign currency from SBI. It can be used as a debit card for purchases (no transaction fees) and withdraw cash from ATM (USD$ 1.75 per transaction). Copy of Passport required for issuing. Some kind of insurance also offered. Convert unused foreign currency back into INR on return.
Issue charges: Rs 110
Re-charge charges: Rs 50

Seminar on Canadian Immigration

There was a Canadian Immigration seminar by CILA in Bangalore on January 26, 2007
It turned out to be a Canadian Immigration Agent seminar. But still I could collect some valuable points.
  • There are 6 points on which an applicant is judged namely Education, Official Language, Experience, Age, Arranged Employment in Canada, Adaptability. One needs to score 67 out of 100 in these points. Upon searching found the same information on net at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-5.html for skilled labor.
  • With a Canadian PR, one can work in US.
  • One can work on-campus for max of 20 hrs per week without work permit and if the education/study course enrolled is Full time
  • One can work off-campus for max of 20 hrs per week during the study days and 40 hrs per week during vacations
  • The work permit obtained as a part of study permit depends on the length of study permit. For example: for a 4 yrs study permit, the work permit is approx 2 yrs.

Work Permit Query & PR Query

I had my Ivey’s interview yesterday and at the start of the interview only, the interviewer told me some thing which made me speechless for sometime. She was a Relationship Manager and involved with companies at Ivey’s for career management.

She told me that we need to have a work permit apart from Study permit to be able to work in Canada after your study. In case you don’t have that the companies will be reluctant to take you or create some problems. So she advised me to start the process of getting a work permit/PR/Landed Immigrant status along with the Study permit. What I knew was that Study visa gives you a work permit of approx 1 year to work after your studies have finished. She told me that this is true but not one yr but a very small time, so work permit is very much required.

I told interviewer that Embassy gives Study permit after being sure that the person is coming back to the home country. If I start my process of work permit, I will not get my study permit. She says she doesn’t know how embassy works and I need to check on it.

What needs to be checked is -
  • for point 1 (it will be definitely true as she is involved in this process and hence know about this), what is to be done.
  • If one would like to work in US if not just after but some years after the MBA, what is that he needs to do now.

Emmigration Check not Required (ECNR) clearance

For most people, ECNR (Emmigration check not required) is striked off in their passports and the same needs to be cleared. Once the clearance is acquired, one saves some checks which are done on the airport while on international travel.
Though not very much required but its preferred to get it done.

Browsing on the net, there are many discrepancies w.r.t. the documents required for getting an ECNR Clearance. Its better to have the following
  • Rs 400 as application fees for ECNR clearance
  • Original and xerox of Indian Passport
  • Eligibility proof for ECNR Clearance: B.Tech Degree, 10th, 12th degree: both xerox and original
  • PAN Card (if applicable)

Ivey's Interview 2 done!

This time for the interview I was alone. That too after a long day at office!
The call came on time on the land-line phone.

The interview started with the interviewer explaining the way the Career Management Team at Ivey works, the work permit issue and Permanent Resident-ship (PR) issue.
She also told me that we have to make our own effort to get a job. This is different from what I know. I have heard that companies do come. From one of Queen’s people’s mouth I heard-you can get a job but for getting a job of your choice, you will have to work out yourself. I very much agree with the Queen’s statement but am astonished to hear the other statement (one just above it).
I told interviewer that Embassy gives Study permit after being sure that the person is coming back to the home country. If I start my process of work permit, I will not get my study permit. She says she doesn’t know how embassy works and I need to check on it.

This really made me to think seriously about the PR thing. But at that moment, I had to proceed with the interview.

The questions were more or less the same as those were in the last 2 interviews.

The turning points came at the end, when she said that the results of the interview will be out by 4-6 weeks. I hoped that word "weeks" was "days". I asked her then if there can be a third interview. The answer "yes" made me really think about the credibility of the Ivey's program as to what they wanted to test in me.

I told her that the visa processing in India takes time and giving such a small notice time, it will be difficult. She said that her department know about the time it takes for visa processing in different countries.

Let's see what is the outcome of this ordeal.

Is there a third interview in store for me? Time will tell!!

  • Which location should the loan be taken? Preferably at the location where the collateral is there
  • Can I get a loan sanctioned for Rs 20 Lakhs, but use only 10 Lakhs? If yes, what about interest? YES, this can be done. The amount which is withdrawn from the sanctioned amount only is calculated for interest [You might need to withdraw a small part of loan initially-can be as small as 50,000. Its like using your credit card the first time to activate it. Check with bank as this can very with bank to bank]
  • Can I get a loan sanctioned for Rs 20 Lakhs, but withdraw 10 Lakhs now and rest 10 Lakhs after 6 months? If yes, what about interest? YES, this can be done. The interest will start to be calculate only when the amount is withdrawn. e.g. In May, the first 10 Lakhs is withdrawn, the interest will start the time the money has been withdrawn. In December, the second 10 Lakhs is withdrawn, so the interest on the second 10 Lakhs start from December

Terms used:
A collateral loan is also called a secured loan. It is a loan obtained from a banking or other financial institution, where in exchange, the creditor may sell that which is offered for collateral if the loan is unpaid. A collateral loan is often offered at a lower interest rate than an unsecured loan, because there is a guarantee of repayment should the borrower default on the loan (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-collateral-loan.htm)

Margin Money: Banks lend out huge money in the form of home loans. Margin money can be best described as an upfront down payment that reassures the lender of the borrower's financial stability and commitment. The upfront down payment can range from as low as five to as high as 15 percent. ( Economic Times Link )

Blunder w.r.t. Canadian Visa photo

  • How do you think there can be some difference between Visa photo clicked at Hyderabad and Bangalore when the embassy and the specifications are same?
  • Can I say I've come to the right place, the best in Bangalore as they say and still get the wrong photograph?
  • Earlier there has been a case-the visa was rejected. Why should i suffer because of your fault?
The above are the few of the many things that I had to shell out apart from money at the photographer's shop when I got the Canadian Visa pic on a "matt" paper. One of my colleagues had confirmed that for her travel to Canada, the travel agent had asked her to get the pics on "glossy" paper as the Visa might get rejected. (The third question above was little far stretched to get the point across ;) )
So finally, gave the order for the Canadian Visa pics to be re-done on a glossy paper.
The specifications for Canadian Visa Photograph are given at http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/photospecifications.html

Apart from this, keep in mind
  • The photo should have your face clear
  • The photo should have a light background
  • The Canadian Embassy wants the negative along (maybe its the only embassy that asks for a negative). So be sure to take the negative even if the photographer denies.
  • The photograph should be on a "glossy" paper. Glossy paper is the one which is very common and is soft to touch. The other kind of paper used is "matt" which has rough surface
  • Get sufficient photos done as you don't know how many you require and when and where.
